About the Tours:
Cannery Summer Experience Tours are back! Join daily guided tours led by our experienced costumed interpreters all summer until Sept 1, 2025. Our Cannery Summer Experience tours have something for everyone!
Machine Demonstration (30 minutes)
Our most popular tour! See the Cannery’s restored 1930s-1950s era canning line in operation as you discuss the transition from manual to machine-operated canning in the first half of the 1900s. Learn how each machine works and how the rapidly changing technology impacted canneries and cannery workers in Steveston and beyond.
Cannery People (45 minutes)
Who were the workers that made the West Coast’s booming salmon canning industry a reality? What did their lives look like, both inside and outside of the Cannery at the turn of the 20th century and beyond? Learn about the history and resilience of the communities behind the Canning Line and how their contributions shaped Steveston and the West Coast.
Herring Reduction (30 minutes)
From 1939-1979, operations at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery shifted to the canning, and then to the reduction, of herring. How did this new process come into being and how exactly did it work? Explore the process that drove 40 years of the Cannery’s operations, and discover how the Cannery needed to grow and change in order to make room for this change.
Visite Guidée (45 minutes)
French language tour; available daily as needed.

Regular admission rates apply: youth 17 years and under, Society Members, and Discovery Pass holders are free. Please note that Summer Experience Tours will be unavailable on the following dates: Saturday, June 7th, Saturday, June 14th, and Tuesday, July 1st, 2025.
