Lucky Clover Knot DIY

Have you ever seen a lucky knot? You may have seen some of these knots displayed as decorations for Lunar New Year or at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery craft workshop! Chinese knotting is a folk art with ties to Buddhism and Taoism. Knotting cord, usually in auspicious colour red, is tied into a symmetrical knot that represents balance. Lucky knots are thought to bring luck (obviously!) and prosperity in the lunar new year. Want to try tying a lucky knot? We have made a visual guide with step-by-step instructions! Display your lucky knot on your backpack, purse, or in your house as a festive symbol of Lunar New Year! Here are some tips:

  • Use thick string, like rope or paracord. Thinner string will work, but it will be a lot more difficult to tie. For a knot that is about the size of your hand, you will need about 3 feet of string.
  • Read all the instructions carefully before starting! Taking the time to learn the steps means that the process of knotting will be easier.
  • Finally, have fun! Make several knots to give to others! Ask your friends if they have any traditions that they have for Lunar New Year!
