BC Heritage Week programming at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery
In celebration of BC Heritage Week 2026, join the Gulf of Georgia Cannery as we “stir the pot” and explore how fish, seafood, and community are connected.
Whether we’re harvesting, cooking, gathering, or celebrating, food brings us together. The Fraser River and its many forms of marine life have been key to the experiences and worldviews of Indigenous peoples, Cannery communities, and Steveston residents since time immemorial.

About BC Heritage Week
BC Heritage Week is a province-wide celebration held each year during the third week of February. Each year, a new theme is chosen to spark creativity and guide events across the province. The week is an open invitation for British Columbians to share stories and experience heritage in their communities.
The 2026 BC Heritage Week theme, Stir the Pot is an open invitation to celebrate food as a form of heritage that is both deeply personal and widely shared. From heirloom seeds and traditional cooking and harvesting methods to community feasts and intergenerational recipes, food reflects who we are and where we come from.
Stir the Pot also suggests advocacy. It is a call to spark conversation, to bring overlooked stories to the surface, and to address issues of food security, cultural recognition and access. By stirring the pot together, we not only honour traditions but also create space for dialogue and discussion.
This year’s theme invites British Columbians to explore food as a vessel of memory, identity, and meaning.
Activity Details
The Cannery’s past Feature Exhibit, Fish Tales, returns to the Cannery for a limited time only in the month of February! Hear from the community about how fish, food, and culture are connected in interview screenings, explore a wide variety of fish and seafood-based recipes, and stir the pot yourselves by sharing favourite recipes, memories, and connections to food of your own!
On view from February 1st – February 28th, 2026.
Included with admission, free for youth 17 and under.
Family Day at the Cannery: “Fish-tastic fun for the whole family!”
This year we have an exciting add-on option—join us for a screening of “Finding Nemo” inside our Cannery Boiler House Theatre and experience the fishy fun of this family film. This add-on is only $5 per person (all ages), with three screenings during the day. Youth must be accompanied by an adult.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society operates a National Historic Site and all revenue helps to support the operation of our museum events and programming for visitors of all ages. Regular admission must be purchased for adults and seniors but, youth 17 and under are free!
Our Family film add-on option is $5 per person (all ages) on Monday, February 16th.
Sneak Peek: Fish Tale Recipe Book
Tune in for a preview of the Cannery’s upcoming publication Fish Tales: Cannery Community Cooking, Past and Present, coming summer of 2026. This community recipe book features a wide selection of favourite recipes from the past and present of both the Cannery, and of Steveston as a whole. Be the first to hear stories featured in the book, preview the recipe list, and learn more about our plans for the book launch this summer!
