About the Event
The Lunar New Year is coming soon, and we are ready to celebrate the Year of the Snake! Join us Sunday, January 26th at 1 pm with a ceremonial lion dance performed by the Vancouver Chinese Lion Dance Association. Watch out for the mischievous lion—he may throw some lettuce at you (but it’s all good luck)! After all this excitement, participate in our Chinese Lucky Knot Workshop at 2 pm to make a Chinese lucky knot to decorate your home as well as bring prosperity and fortune.
FAQ:
• Who celebrates Lunar New Year?
Lunar New Year is celebrated in many different places, including China, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia!
• Is the Chinese Lucky Knot Workshop free?
The Chinese Lucky Knot Workshop is included with regular admission.
• How old do you have to be to do the Chinese Lucky Knot Workshop?
People of all ages are welcome to learn to tie a clover knot (one of the easiest lucky knots!). There will be staff and volunteers on hand to help with those who need a bit more guidance.
• Why does the lion throw lettuce when it dances?
The word for lettuce in Chinese is “choy”, which sounds similar to the word for fortune/prosperity, which is also “choy”! The lion eats up the lettuce then “spits” out the rest of it to spread wealth for the Lunar New Year!
