About the Event

The Lunar New Year is coming soon, and we are ready to begin the Year of the Horse! Join us Sunday, February 15th for our day of celebration. Starting at 1:30pm, participate in our Chinese Lucky Knot Workshop to make a Chinese lucky knot keychain for prosperity and fortune. Then, at 3:30pm, join us at the main entrance of the Cannery for an exciting performance from the Vancouver Chinese Lion Dance Association. Watch out for the mischievous lion—he may throw some lettuce at you (but it’s all good luck)!

Chinese Lucky Knot Craft Workshop

1:30pm – 3:30pmChinese Lucky Knot Workshop – included with regular admission,
FREE for youth (17 and under). Workshop will be held at the Cannery Kids’ Corner.

Chinese knotting is a folk art with ties to Buddhism and Taoism. Knotting cord, usually in auspicious colour red, is tied into a symmetrical knot that represents balance. Lucky knots are thought to bring luck and prosperity in the new year.

Want to try tying a lucky knot? Drop-in to the Cannery’s Lucky Knot workshop where staff will teach you how to make your own good luck charm and bring it home as a keychain!

Lion Dance Performance

3:30 pm – 4:00 pm – Lion Dance – FREE, dance will be taking place by the main entrance of the Cannery.

Experience the Vancouver Chinese Lion Dance Association as they perform a traditional Lion Dance! Like the Lucky Knot, lion dances bring good luck and fortune, and they require special training and skill to perform. The Lion Dance will take place outside of the Cannery building, no admission required!
