Volunteer with the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society to connect with your community, gain valuable work experience, make friends, develop new skills, and learn about the history of this National Historic Site.
Youth Leadership Program applications available now!
Local high school students (15 years or older) may apply for the Society’s Youth Leadership Volunteer Program. This program runs from October 2019 to May 2020, and offers the opportunity for youth to contribute to their community while learning about local history.
This year’s program focus will be on taking a leadership role at special events. Youth Leadership Volunteers will be mentored by Cannery staff and volunteers, gain hands-on experience in a museum environment, and develop strong leadership skills. A maximum of 5 students will be selected to participate.

Volunteer Roles at the Cannery
Gallery Attendant: Learn about the history of the west coast commercial fishing industry and share this knowledge with Cannery visitors. No previous experience or knowledge is necessary; all training is provided. Gallery Attendants may volunteer on a regular basis and/or during special events.
Tour Guide and/or Education Program Assistants: Gallery Attendants may attend additional training to lead public tours of the Cannery or assist with Education Programs. Tour Guides and Education Program Assistants may volunteer on a regular basis and/or during special events.
Gift Shop Assistant: Receive, organize, label, and display items for the Cannery Store. From May to September, Gift Shop Assistants help Gift Shop Staff with customer inquiries.
Youth Leadership Program (Gr. 10-12): This year-long program engages future museum and heritage leaders with hands-on museum experiences and field trips. See blurb above photo gallery for details. Applications to participate may be downloaded here. Selected applicants must be available 2-4 hours per week from September to May.
Special Events – Visitor Services: Greet, lead activities and provide information to visitors attending special events at the Cannery. These fast-paced shifts happen throughout the year at events like Easter at the Cannery, Music at the Cannery and The Haunted Sea.
Special Events – Backstage Crew: Build, prepare and set up/take down materials for special events throughout the year. Learn new skills and be part of an exciting ‘behind the scenes’ team!
Cannery Farmers’ Market: Get involved in a local community event – join the Cannery Farmers’ Market Team! The roles available throughout the Market season (October – April) include set up and take down, greeting, selling raffle tickets, keeping the site clean, and more!
Archival Research/Collections: Assist the Collections Manager with special projects; subject to availability.
