Bacteria beginning to resist antibiotics near salmon pens
A two-year study in BCâs Broughton Archipelago has discovered that âbacteria around open net pen salmon farms are developing a resistance to antibiotics.â Although they are not completely resistant, they do require higher concentrations of antibiotics to stop bacterial growth. Alexandra Morton, one of the researchers working on this study, considers this revelation âgroundbreaking.â
âWe know drugs are bad for us when they are used in our food products and, if the fish are carrying antibiotic resistant bacteria and we get it in our gut, it trains other bacteria to become resistant to drugs,â she said. …[read full article]
